Pacific Rim National Park

The Trench

Pacific Rim National Park serves as the launch point for Andrea and her companions’ sea-kayaking journey along Vancouver Island’s western coast, turning a travel feature about the island into a hazardous effort to get close to whale pods. In the episode, the park is both a practical point of departure and the threshold between familiar land-based sightseeing and the rough ocean they have come to explore.

Setting and Approach

The expedition takes place on Vancouver Island, which lies west of the city of Vancouver, parallel to the main coast of British Columbia. The island’s dramatic geography, varied wildlife, and contrasting weather had already shaped the group’s trip: after arriving by ferry in Port Hardy, the two couples spent a week hiking mountain trails and exploring the granite peaks and alpine glaciers along the island’s spine. Andrea photographed the scenery and wildlife, but whales were the subject she most wanted to find.

Departure for the Whale Search

After more than two years of trying to secure approval for a feature article on Vancouver Island, Andrea persuaded her travel editor to green-light the assignment. Reaching the whales meant venturing into the cold, hazardous waters off the island’s western coastline. She also had to convince Karen McNeil that the group could manage the demands of sea kayaking, which offered the best way to approach the pods. They put in at Pacific Rim National Park that morning and headed north through rough coastal water, staying relatively close to shore.

Narrative Role

The park is presented through an expedition’s immediate purpose rather than through a detailed account of its facilities or boundaries. The group’s launch from the park follows a week of hiking and sightseeing, but the hoped-for payoff now depends on facing the island’s exposed coastal conditions. Andrea pulls on her dry suit, adjusts her mask and snorkel, secures her underwater camera, and grips her paddle as she waits for the chance to photograph the whales. The scene makes Pacific Rim National Park the point where the journey’s scenic promise gives way to physical risk and anticipation.
